Week Five

This week has been a bit of a slow week. I have felt low on motivation and after hearing the news of no summer show it put a bit of a downer on my week. Never the less I still created some painting and carried on mark making. I also had a positive surgery tutorial which I felt really happy about after being so nervous.

This week I tried to mark make to different genres of music that I have not listened to before. Heavy Metal is a genre that I have never thought about listening to so it was a good one to see how the music would effect my mood and the colours I used. I felt like there was aggression in the music and it also made me feel on edge. I think you can defiantly see this in the marks that have been created.

I also did some mark making to the Arctic Monkeys which felt paired back and very raw. The music felt real and natural so I didn’t want this piece to be busy and colourful.

Grime is another genre of music that I listened to which felt powerful and assertive. The lyrics felt that they were very real and to the point which is why I chose lines as the main forms in this piece.

After listening to these genres which are all very different and heavy I wanted to listen to something that I enjoyed and made me feel happy. I have been putting together a playlist of female artist that when I listen to them I feel inspired and empowered. I wanted some of the pieces to feel feminine. I would like to keep building on this playlist of artists and creating more marks that fit with there sound.

I have also had a meeting with Maggie and Kath to help get a clearer idea of what I could do with my mark making and what kind of techniques I could add to them to add more textures and depth.

Going into the next week I would like to carry on with experiment and maybe start doing some collage and cut outs. This will help me add to the collection of work I have to then allow me to make more varied patterns.

Week Four

This week has been really fun. I started off the week with a tutorial with Keireine which was really positive. I then have spent the rest of the week mark making and creating lots of expressive pages. I have been listening to different genres of music to influence colour, shapes and forms. It has been really experimental and interesting to see how closely related mood and colour is. When creating it felt that certain sound were certain shapes and colours. This idea is something that i haven’t ever thought about before so it was so interesting to explore.

Here are some pictures from different pages in my book so far.

Client Profile

This week I have been thinking about who I want my work to be aimed at. I have put together a client profile to hopefully show who my intended customers are.

TARGET MARKET

The target market for my project will be female. The age range will be young adult, 25 – 40. I have chosen this age as I want my products to be aimed at people that may be furnishing their homes for the first time. I would like my products to be affordable so they will be appealing to my target audience.

CLIENT PROFILE

My customer is bold and bright with an eye for design. A busy independent female who knows what she wants and what she likes. Her personality shows through her outfit choices, she is not afraid to be daring or to wear bright clashing colours. She loves to entertain and socialise whether that be at home or out in bars and cafes. Hobbies that she enjoys are cooking, going to see live music and yoga. In her down time she loves to read a good book. She is definitely a sun seeker and tries to spend as much time in the sun as possible as well as going on trips abroad. Travel and culture are important to her, experiencing new places and immersing herself in new cultures is definitely something that she is good at. Making the most of everything and living life to the fullest is a motto that she stands by. Being active is important whether it be working out in the gym or strolling through the park, she values her health. She is part of a big family that are all quite close and love to see each other at big family gatherings or days out. Her favourite past time is to watch the sun set, she has a fascination for the sky. The countryside is where she grew up however to follow her dream job she is now living in the city. Work is important to her as she is trying to gain loads of experience to allow her to move up the ladder and eventually have a higher position in the company.

Week Three

Week Three has been exciting, I have been doing lots of researching on colour theory and how colour can change your mood. This is an idea that I would like to develop further and experiment with in my own work.

Warm colours are happy colours where as cool colours can make you feel calm or sad. When researching this I had the idea of experimenting with the designs I will make to have opposite colour palettes to see how moods are effected and see what works best in an interior space.

This week I also began putting everything into a new sketch book. I am trying really hard to keep it neat and in an order that makes sense as in the past my sketch books can be messy and jumbled.

My tutorial discussing my self set brief was successful and I feel that I am now happy with the direction I am going in and what I need to achieve. An area that I have been working on in my brief was my target market and client profile. I have been putting together a persona and a mood board to go with this. Here are my first thoughts on what i want my target market to be.

Week Two

This week has been such a busy week looking into the Modernist Movement and finalising my ideas for my brief. When research the topic area I discovered that Abstract Expressionism was really interesting and that I really liked where they took there inspiration from.

Many Expressionist Artists found inspiration from there spirituality, they were very connected with themselves and thought that art should just be art. It does not need to have subjects to have meaning and be beautiful.

Frank Stella famously said about his paintings ‘What you see is what you see’

This idea that that there work didnt need to be objects and that they could be experimental with colour, shape and form was something that interested me. I would like to explore these ideas further in my own work.

Music was also a big influence into how the artists created there work, Kandinsky believed that certain colours sounded like instruments and when they were paired together they could harmonise. Others such as Jackson Pollock used music to guided him in his process. The idea of combining sound, colour and emotions to mark make is something I would like to explore further.

My research has helped me decided on what direction I would like my brief to go in. Abstract Expressionism will be the starting point however there are so many other areas that I would like to consider and influence me on my journey. The values the artists hold around art is art and that they were mark making using there spirituality to guide them interests me greatly. With this as a starting point I feel that it is exciting and could lead me in a fun experimental journey.

MoodBoards

Here are my first initial Mood boards created on the theme of Modernism and the Abstract Expressionist Movement. I am particularly inspired by shape, colour and form and I want to be including lots of different textures in my work to add layering and depth.

Week One

Week One was the beginning of our new project. I was excited about hearing the new brief but also nervous to start the last uni project. It was lovely to see everyone on the welcome back teams meeting and to catch up with what everyone has been doing.

The new brief is exciting as we get to write it ourselves. This is also daunting as i have so many ideas i just dont know where to being. My firsy ideas were that i wanted to do an abstract project on fruit but after looking at trends on WGSN and having a group tutorial i decided that this might be limiting and i wouldnt be able to create enough motifs and ideation from it.

After researching different trends I noticed that I was interested in abstract marks and textures which could be linked to the modernist movements. Below I have linked some of the trends that have interested me. I think I can take lots of inspiration from these trends as they are very expressive.

Aims for week two are to keep researching into the modernist movement to gain more knowledge. This hopefully will help me write my new brief and decide where my interests lie.
