Fridays Workshops

So far on Fridays we have been learning how to use Photoshop and different Stitch techniques.

I have never used Photoshop before so I was nervous going into it as I have no idea how it works. I found the first session on how to create a professional mood board so useful and I felt that I really learnt something new that I could now do in my own time. However in the second session on colour and how to colour in your illustrations that we scanned in and change the colour of water coloured paintings really difficult and I don’t have any idea on how to get the look I am aiming for. I am going to have to practice Photoshop a lot I think before I start achieving a good level of work that I am satisfied with.

Maggies speed dating workshop with the sewing machines was really enjoyable I found that I learnt lots of new technics that I could just go and use and apply to my own work whenever I want to now. I found the ruffling machine scary but when you get used to it, it produces really cool results.

Trend Influences

When talking in a group with others that are doing the same trend as me, Woodland Undergrowth. We spoke about we thought that the trend held history and that William Morris’ work would link to the trend neatly.

it reminds me of old tales, myths and legends such as Alice and Wonderland, Peter rabbit, Toad of Toad Hall and Mid Summers Night Dream. I feel that I get this impression from the light magic part of the trend.

The trend also talks about being dense which suggests to me that is contains layers, this could mean physically or metaphorically in the sense that my work could contain lots of layer or the fact that a woodland is made of layers.

The trend is part of the arts and crafts movement and I think that it is also very art nouveau. it has a tapestry feel to it in the way that it is thick and tells a story or tale.

I feel that the trend is very narrative so I want to incorporate some sort of story in to my work.

Clarissa Hulse

Clarissa Hulse designs beautiful and luxurious homeware from her studio in North London, with an emphasis on botanical imagery and bold colour.

Born in Prague, Clarissa lived a nomadic childhood, spending time in Thailand, Spain, Italy and Greece. This eclectic background has had a huge influence on her approach to colour and design.
“I have an obsession with colour – it is definitely the hallmark of my work. Also the beauty of nature completely fascinates me – I draw most of my inspiration from the countryside. Perhaps this enthusiasm stems from my childhood – my Greek mother was a keen gardener – she used to let me roam in flower beds while she was gardening and taught me the names of all the species.”

After graduating in textiles from Brighton Art College, Clarissa began to produce hand-printed scarves which became highly sought after on both sides of the Atlantic. This evolved into a line of home accessories, and over the course of fifteen years Clarissa has built the business to become one of the most respected textile brands in the UK. Fashion Formula

Today Fashion Formula came in today to talk to us about what they can offer and how the digital print process works.

I found the talk very interesting and it now has made clear how the process work. In the talk Alex spoke about how you can choose from over 75 different fabrics. Within my project I want to use organic and natural materials so it was good to find out that source 3 recycled fabrics and 3 organic fabrics. I also found out that pigment printing is the most environmentally friendly so hopefully when I look in to this further and choose a final fabric I will be able to use the most sustainable and environmentally friendly method.

The company do all sorts of printing from fabric to wallpaper. They also have a resource where you can print your samples on to fabric and paper to see if the colours work. Getting the right colour is a big process as different fabrics pick up and react to pigment differently.

I am looking forward to the final outcome of what I can produce and how well it will work from being digitally printed.

Fridays Workshop – Week One

I really enjoyed the first weeks session of Photoshop and Speed dating. I had never used Photoshop before so learning a few basic’s and how to make a professional mood boards was so helpful for me.

Since learning these skills I have made a few more mood boards to incorporate in to my work. I feel that for me it is going to take a lot of practice to get a high standard on photoshop just because I am so new to it.

Then in the afternoon we did a crash course on ten different sewing machines which was so useful. This allows us to get inducted and learn loads of new techniques that we may want to take forward. I now have loads of different samples that I can use as a reference in the future.

New Brief/ Market Research

We had a lecture on the new briefing today which was exciting as its a big project that looks full of lots of new things to me such as using photoshop/illustrator and digital printing and stich.

When looking through the new trends the ones that stood out the most to me where Folk Floral, Woodland Undergrowth, and Light Patchwork. After looking at them in a bit more depth I think I have come to the conclusion that I would like to base my project on Woodland Undergrowth.

We were also given a department store that we would be designing for. John Lewis was mine, in groups we then started to create a persona of who we through would shop there and what our customer would be. Here is a photo of the lady that we created, Vivian Everly. We thought that they would be a strong driven socialist Mum of 2 who would have a good job.

We also did a word association with John Lewis and created a metaphor gestalt, which will also help us remember who our store is and what kind of person would shop there.

Evaluation of the Bag

Overall I think that our bag was really successful, the end product turned out how we envisioned with only a few slight hiccups. I think that the size of the bag works perfectly for the context of use. We wanted it to be light weight and to fit to the body as it would be used during skateboarding. Having the adjustable straps also allows the bag to be adjusted to anyone’s body type.

We also added the elasticated hoops to hold skate tools on the side of the bag. The bag has a roll top which is good for keeping water out and keeping everything secure inside as its hard for it to come open.

The colours of the bag wasn’t the exact colours that we wanted as the fabric didn’t take to the dye as much as we wanted. However I think the colours that we ended up with work really well together. I am really pleased of how the pattern turned out there where a few marks that if we had more time I would of liked to have cleaned up.

Learning to look at the body -week 1

What did I Learn from this mornings session?

In the morning session we learnt about how different time periods viewed the body very differently and also different cultures have very different approaches to the body.

Some examples of this are that the Egyptians were very body conscious and we know this from there hieroglyphic’s as there were only ever painted from side on and in one shape as they didn’t want to show any imperfections.

Another example would be that in Japan a very long time ago they would paint there teeth black to show wealth. However we have always viewed having white teeth meant good hygiene and cleanliness which could also link back to health. This is interesting as I hadn’t realised that we give colour certain meanings.

We also discussed the idea of religion and medicine. Religion was very empowering many many years ago and due to religion it meant that people had no idea about the body as nobody had ever looked inside one as it was closed to God. The theories about the body where very strange and the logic and reasoning to do things was bases on the zodiac man. It is interesting to see that even on theses ancient times that they thought that means bodies were ‘normal’ and women’s were just odd or unperfected men’s bodies. this suggests that sexism began many years before what I though it would have began.

As time went on people got more inquisitive about the body and wanted to learn more so they began to use dead prisoners to examine. I found interesting that as went up the centuries the men were the ones who did the examining of the bodies and they were the ones that were the doctors.

My person favourite part of the lecture was when we began to discuss whether people living longer was a triumph of medicine or a downfall.

This is something that I find really interesting as I think it is a downfall, I believe that due to people living longer and technology being so advance that the world is going to hit a crisis very soon. I believe that people have known about this for a while that is why they created cancer, almost like a plague as if people are living to long then the world will just die. I also believe this is why they are so desperate to expand and find another planet we can live on so that planet earth wont be s crowed.

Printing On the Bag

Over the last couple of days Lizzy and I  have been dying and printing the fabric to get it ready for the actual construction of the bag.

Friday was a tricky day as we were fairly new to the dye lab. In the morning I was by myself trying to get the correct colour for the fabric that was going to be used for the strap. However the cotton wasn’t taking to the dye and it was taking forever to make it dark blue. In the end we had to take it out as there wasn’t going to be enough time to dye the fabric for the main body of the bag.

We had planned to have dark blue straps and a middle tone of grey for the bag however reaching these colours was really difficult and time consuming so we had to settle with lighter colours. We kept adding more and more dye and leaving it for ages and it was taking to the fabric. If we were to do this again and had more time then maybe leaving the fabric over night to soak would allow it to get to the right colour that we were trying to achieve.

After the dying the fabric we then got the pieces cut out and began to print on the bag. This also took longer than expect as the print studio was so busy, meaning that everyone was sharing equipment so you were always waiting. We got the majority of the printing and the re-dying of the fabric done meaning that Monday morning would be using the heat press to foil the straps.

The foiling took me no time at all meaning that I could then hand over the fabric to Priya to start making.

For the rest of the day we started to think about what we were going to talk about in our presentation and in what order. I wrote down everything that we could possible talk about and some of the problems that we overcame as a group. I then also finished the mood board off that we did as a group to show in our presentation. It consists of a lots of pictures, photocopies of drawings and fabric sample to sum up our journey.

Whilst doing all of this we would pop in to see how the bag was coming along and if we could do anything. Even though I am a textiles student I haven’t any experience in making a bag or how to use the fashions sewing machines so I felt a bit useless.

Design sign off

Today was the coming together of all of our ideas and finalising it so we knew exactly how we where going to make the bag. We had already made on mock up of the bag in paper but when actually seeing the size of is and the structure we realised that for it to work that we needed to make a few amendments.

We then also thought about the pattern placement and where the logo will be placed on to the bag. Me and Lizzy then started to get all the designs drawn up on to tracing paper ready to go into the print room.

Once we had made changes to the pattern we then made our second model out of paper. This design functioned better. This was then the final pattern and dimensions where all correct so we then began making a mock up of the bag in calico to test it.

The design works really well, the only issue we had was making the base and the sides sturdy enough, but we soon came up with a solution to either put card or plastic in the lining of the bag.

Other complications that we had before we could get it signed off were how we were going to fasten the bag together and where we were going to source the D rings and clips for the strap. After being told that there weren’t any available for us we were quick to order some so they arrive in time.

We worked really well as a team helping each other out and coming up with solutions and ideas for the bag and the process.
